This historical walking tour will begin at the Dade Heritage Trust office building at 190 SE Twelfth Terrace, once the surgical office of Miami’s pioneer physician Dr. James Jackson, and will progress northward toward the Miami River. See the doctor’s office that was moved from downtown to the Brickell neighborhood in 1916. Learn about the Brickell family and how they owned and sold most of the land found south of the Miami River which is now part of their namesake neighborhood. Hear about the two apartment buildings, built by the Brickell’s two oldest sons, at the end of the Tamiami Trail.
The tour will proceed to the Miami Circle, an area once known as Brickell Point, named for the family who settled at the mouth of the Miami River in 1871. Learn about the Tequesta tribe that were the earliest documented inhabitants of this quarter and about the family for whom the neighborhood is named. We will visit the family mausoleum in Brickell Park, the historic First Presbyterian Church, and the buildings that replaced the mostly residential neighborhood to make it a high-rise commercial and residential center.
While much of old Brickell no longer stands, the stories of the neighborhood of yesteryear are both fascinating and foundational to the quarter’s evolution to an area that some residents refer to as the Manhattan of the south.
